Peace Poster Competition - "Vision of Peace"

The annual peace poster contest jointly organised by the Lions Club of Indera Mahkota and the Lions Club of Kuantan City was held on Sunday, 10.10.10, at SJK(C) Pei Chai. The Organising Chairpersons for this year’s contest were Lns Doris Lim and Wendy Yap from the respective Clubs.

The theme for this year is “Vision of Peace” and the contest was open to students between the ages of 11 to 13 from schools within the District of Kuantan. 

The contestants were each given 3 hours to design, draw and colour a poster picture which they thought best depicted a vision of peace. There were all together 60 entries from 80 registrants. 

The panel of judges comprised Ms. Lee Mei Yen, an art teacher at Tadika Sri Ayu and Persatuan Kwang Si, Mr. Yeo Chin Cheong, a former cartoonist with Nanyang Siang Pau and Ms. Yee Yook Mooi from Yi Ping Xuan Art School in Air Putih.

The winning entry was submitted by Low Xue Hui of Sekolah Tengku Ampuan Afzan who received the first prize trophy, a cash prize of RM200.00 and a gift set containing art block, water colours, paint brushes, palette and bag. The second prize went to Ong Shi Yi from Sekolah Sultan Abu Bakar who received the second prize trophy, a cash prize of RM150.00 and a gift set. Sam Victor of SJK(C) Pei Chai came in third and Hidayat Asyraf Bin Kamrajan of Sekolah Bukit Sekilau took fourth place. Sam received a cash prize of RM100.00 and Hidayat received RM80.00. Both also received a trophy and gift set each. 6 other contestants also each won a trophy, a cash prize of RM50.00 and a gift set for taking the fifth to tenth place. All participants received a Certificate of Appreciation each for their effort. 

The prizes were presented to the winners by Guest of Honour, Mr. Goh Woon Lai PJK PKC, principal of SJK(C) Pei Chai accompanied by Ms. Marene Teo, President of Lions Club Indera Mahkota and Ms. Susan Chew, President of Lions Club Kuantan City. 

The peace poster contest is one of the major projects held on a yearly basis by Lions Clubs International. The mission is to create awareness and understanding amongst children at a young age of the meaning of “world peace”. The contest in Kuantan is only the first leg of this international competition. 

The posters drawn by Xue Hui, Shi Yi, Sam and Hidayat Asyraf will now be submitted to compete at the national level. The winning poster at the national level will proceed to compete internationally where the grand prize winner will be invited together with his/her parents and the President of the sponsoring Lion Club to the United Nations Centre in New York to receive his/her prize which includes an engraved plaque and a cash prize of USD2,500. There will also be 23 other entries selected to receive the merit award which includes a Certificate of Achievement and a cash prize of USD500 each.

In previous Peace Poster Contests, the grand prize winners have hailed from Brazil, Guadeloupe, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Martinique, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United States and two years ago, the grand prize winner was from our very own in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.
