On 18th January 2011, the Lions of Kuantan City paid a visit to the handicapped students at Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti (PDK) Tunas Sri Teruntum at Jalan Mat Kilau in Kuantan. The students were treated to Kentucky fried chicken during recess and later ang pows were handed out to the students and staff of the Centre in conjunction with the upcoming Lunar New Year.
The Centre has been in operation for more than 20 years and currently has 50 students and 10 teachers. The monthly fee for a handicapped child to attend the Centre is RM50.00 which is used by the Centre to pay for utilities, amenities, basic necessities, repairs, education materials and stationery as well as providing the students with 1 meal per day. According to Noraishikin Binti Alias, the Centre’s Administrator, this is hardly enough and the Centre relies on the generosity and kindness of the public to provide for the Centre and the students. The teachers’ basic salaries are paid by the Government.
Currently, the Centre is hoping for a volunteer music teacher who will be willing to provide simple music lessons to the students on Tuesday mornings. The Lions Club of Kuantan City has approached several music teachers and hopes for such a volunteer soon.
